Why Pipes Leak at Joints and How Solvent Welding Should Actually Be Done

Ninety percent of PVC and CPVC leaks are at the joint, not the pipe. Almost all of them are technique failures. Here is the step-by-step solvent welding method that actually holds.

Ask any plumber where their PVC or CPVC system leaked and the answer is almost always the same: the joint. In our field-service data, 92 percent of leaks in the first two years of service originate at a solvent-cement joint — and almost every one of those is technique, not material.

This guide walks through the solvent welding method exactly as taught to our channel-partner plumbers, so you can spec the process into your project and eliminate the biggest single failure category in plumbing.

What Solvent Welding Actually Is

Solvent welding is not glueing. The cement contains a solvent (THF for PVC, cyclohexanone for CPVC) that dissolves the outer surface of the pipe and the inner surface of the fitting. Under pressure, the two surfaces fuse and the solvent evaporates leaving a single monolithic piece of plastic.

Done correctly, the joint is stronger than the pipe body. Done poorly, the surfaces do not fuse and you have a slip fit held only by mechanical friction.

The Six Rules That Prevent 90 Percent of Leaks

1. Use the correct cement. PVC solvent cement for PVC pipes, CPVC solvent cement for CPVC pipes. They are not interchangeable and the wrong cement will leak inside six months.

2. Cut the pipe square. A ragged or angled cut prevents full seating in the fitting socket. Use a proper wheel-cutter, not a hacksaw.

3. Deburr and chamfer the pipe end. A chamfer helps the cement spread as the pipe enters the fitting. Sharp burrs scrape cement off the pipe surface as it enters.

4. Dry-fit test. The pipe should enter one-third to two-thirds into the fitting under hand pressure. If it slides in fully or does not enter at all, one of the components is out of tolerance — reject.

5. Apply cement to both surfaces. Pipe outer and fitting inner. A generous even coat on both is essential — cement on only one surface is the single most common failure cause.

6. Assemble immediately and hold. Push the pipe fully home with a quarter turn to spread cement evenly. Hold for 30 seconds so the pipe does not push out of the socket while the solvent is still active.

Cement Cure and Pressure Test Timing

The cement cures in two phases: set time (until the joint can be handled) and cure time (until full pressure can be applied). Timings depend on pipe diameter and ambient temperature.

Why Joints Actually Leak — The Real Causes

Wrong cement type (PVC on CPVC or vice versa). Fails within 6 months.

Cement dried out or expired. Cement older than 12 months from manufacture or left uncapped for hours does not solvate the pipe surface properly.

Applied to only one surface. The pipe pushes in dry on one side and slides out under pressure.

Under-applied. A thin smear of cement is not enough to bridge the gap between pipe and socket.

Assembled after cement started skinning. If you cannot join within 30 seconds of applying, throw the joint and start over.

Insufficient cure time before pressure test. High-pressure test on a green joint blows the joint apart.

Water in the socket. Test line pressure or unfinished pipe left open in the rain traps water — solvent cement will not bond to wet surfaces.

Pressure Testing the Finished System

After full cure time, pressure test to 1.5x working pressure for one hour, then hold at working pressure for a further 24 hours. Any joint that weeps or drops pressure must be cut out and rejointed — a leaking joint cannot be repaired with more cement on the outside.

When to Use Threaded or Mechanical Joints Instead

Solvent joints are permanent — you cannot disassemble them. For unions at meters, valves and fixtures, use threaded fittings with PTFE tape or brass-insert transition fittings, which allow future service.

You cannot patch a leaking solvent joint from the outside. Cut out the joint, replace with a coupling and two new joints made correctly with fresh cement on both surfaces.
