Buying plumbing pipes for a new home or renovation in India can feel confusing — there are at least six different pipe materials in the market and dozens of brands. This guide walks through the exact checklist our engineers recommend, in the order you should evaluate each point.
1. Match the Pipe to the Application
Hot & cold water plumbing inside the home: CPVC (IS 15778).
Cold-water supply, terrace tanks: UPVC or PVC (IS 4985).
Soil, waste and rainwater: PVC SWR (IS 13592).
Borewell and submersible pumps: PVC Column Pipes (IS 12818).
Underground sewer or large drainage: PVC underground or DWC pipes.
Outdoor water lines, gas, agricultural distribution: HDPE or MDPE.
2. Always Look for the ISI Mark
The ISI mark is your single best guarantee that the pipe meets Indian Standards for wall thickness, pressure rating and material purity. Counterfeit and unbranded pipes often fail within 2–3 years.
Check the print on the pipe itself — it should list the IS number, manufacturer name, batch and class rating.
3. Check the Pressure Class
PVC and CPVC pipes are sold in different pressure classes (e.g. SDR 11, SDR 13.5, Class 1, Class 2, Class 3). Higher pressure class = thicker wall = longer life.
For typical Indian home plumbing, CPVC SDR 11 is the safe default. For overhead-tank pressure, PVC Class 2 or Class 3 is sufficient.
4. Pick a Manufacturer with a Service Network
Pipes are a 25–50 year investment. Pick a manufacturer with dealers, technical support and warranty backing in your city — not just the cheapest pipe at the counter.
5. Insist on Genuine Fittings & Solvent Cement
Using cheap fittings or wrong solvent cement is the #1 cause of joint failure. Use fittings and cement supplied by the same pipe manufacturer where possible.
