CPVC has replaced GI in nearly every modern Indian home. Here's the full guide — standards, sizes, fittings and installation best practices.
CPVC (Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride) is the industry standard for hot and cold water plumbing inside Indian homes, hotels, hospitals and commercial buildings. Manufactured to IS 15778, CPVC pipes safely carry water up to 93°C and outlast every metallic alternative.
Why CPVC Beats GI and Copper
No rust, no scale — water remains clean for the life of the system.
Service life 50+ years vs 7–10 years for GI.
Up to 4× faster installation with solvent-welded joints.
Lower thermal conductivity — hotter water at the tap, lower bills.
SDR 11 vs SDR 13.5
SDR 11 — heavier wall, 28 kgf/cm² at 23°C. The default for Indian homes.
SDR 13.5 — thinner wall, lower pressure rating. Used for low-pressure cold lines only.
CTS Sizes Available
½ inch (15 mm), ¾ inch (20 mm), 1 inch (25 mm), 1¼ inch (32 mm), 1½ inch (40 mm), 2 inch (50 mm) — covering everything from a single tap to a multi-storey riser.
CPVC Fittings
Elbows, tees, reducers, couplers, brass-threaded transitions, unions and ball valves are all available in IS 15778 CPVC. Mix-and-match across manufacturers is risky — stick to one brand for guaranteed dimensional compatibility.
Installation Best Practice
Cut square, deburr, dry-fit, then solvent weld.
Use one-step yellow CPVC solvent cement only.
Cure 1 hour at 18°C+ before pressure testing at 7 kgf/cm².
Support horizontal runs every 800 mm for hot water lines.
